CASE STUDY: RECRUITMENT

In 2015, I was given an opportunity to assist the Human Resources department at E NOA Corporation as their recruiter.

PROBLEMS
  • DRIVER SHORTAGE: Transportation contracts could not be fulfilled properly.  Employees were driving tired from working excessive overtime hours, creating an unsafe work environment, and costing the company in huge labor costs. 
  • RECRUITMENT FAILURE: Over $25,000/month in various recruitment efforts yielded little no results. To make things more challenging, the transportation industry is one of the most competitive in Hawaii and E NOA Corporation had many other competitors offering much better pay/benefits.
  • DRIVER RETENTION: Our drivers were leaving and going to the competition because of the better pay, benefits, schedule, etc.
  • COMPANY CULTURE: The company culture started suffering from the negative impacts of a driver shortage and retention problem. The best people were leaving the company and management was forced to hold onto problem employees. 
RESULTS

By late 2016, E NOA Corporation had a different problem... too many drivers! We became the ONLY transportation company to have a full roster without having to place a single classified job ad or attend a single job fair. The best part is that I never had to compete with others on pay/benefits. 

ONE ON ONE RECRUITMENT

I went out 7 days a week and spoke to individual people (one on one) about the opportunity to work with us. My KPI/goal was to have 1 person a day come into apply for a job. Here is a picture of Quincy and I at the vehicle training barn. 

BEYOND RECRUITMENT

We took over the supervisor area and created a makeshift classroom. My focus at the time was to keep new hires engaged by creating small groups. Here is a picture of Aisua, Lisa, and Phillip training on the computer for the CDL permit test.

CASE STUDY: NEW PRODUCTS

In 2016, E NOA Tours was asked to create a new product for customers that want to do a physical activity while on vacation versus the traditional sightseeing experience that most companies offer. Since the team was busy, I chose to take on this project and figure it out with the help of Asian Pacific Advisors. We chose to go with an easy/medium difficulty trail that could operate in rain or shine. This is what we came up with...

BETA TESTING

For the first few weeks, I  personally operated the tour to figure out the logistics and get a good feel for what the average customer wanted to experience. After 1 month, we had a specific outline for what the product would be.

MENTOR/TRAINING

Month 2 was about hiring new employees and teaching them the framework of how to do this tour. One of my first trainees, Heather is pictured here with her group. 

PRODUCT LAUNCH

Tour guides were trained, brochures designed, promo video completed, and sales team started promoting. It took 3 months from concept to full operational product launch.

CASE STUDY: INCREASE SALES

Increasing sales is different for each company. For E NOA Tours & The Waikiki Trolley, (B2B) business to business relationships is where I focused my attention to in 2016-2018. 

PARTNERSHIPS

Every week I would drive out and assist the partners with briefings to their customers in hopes to increase their sales. I found that helping my partners succeed paid the best dividends. My partners always supported me back with my objectives.

NETWORKING

Networking events for your business are great, but is only worth it if the person you are sending knows how to get business from those events. This dinner locked us in to every cruise ship!

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION

All businesses need to find a  balance between growth and contribution. On behalf of E NOA Corporation, I attend a few charity events every month and make donations to various community groups in our area.

CASE STUDY: NEW BUSINESS

T-Galleria by DFS is the transportation hub for the Waikiki Trolley. I always make it a point to learn about the business needs of my client's partners. I learned that they had an initiative to increase foot traffic to the third floor of their store.

For 7 months, I showed up every single day to find ways to help them achieve their objective. I found a reliable system by month 2 and started to get the attention of store executives. Because I was helping them, they let me continue to do promotions in their lobby. 

I bridged the lobby partnership between T-Galleria and E NOA Corporation. Together, we have taken steps forward to help each other's business needs. 

IDENTIFY

I sat in the lobby of T-Galleria by DFS and envisioned an opportunity for me to capture the passing foot traffic and redirect that traffic to go upstairs.

TEST

I set up a folding table 7 days a week for 7 months with a prize wheel. Traffic to the third floor increased and my theory was correct. I did this by myself every single day! ALL- IN!

SCALE

I took on a group of interns from the University of Hawaii and mentored them to scale my promotion prize wheel. We upgraded to a fancy little rolling kiosk.
